Tongue rest position

The tongue rest position refers to the relaxed position of the tongue when the mouth is closed and no speaking, chewing or swallowing is taking place. Usually, the tongue lies gently against the palate, with the tip positioned slightly behind the upper incisors.

This natural position of the tongue is important for healthy oral function and has an influence on

  • breathing,
  • swallowing,
  • speech formation and
  • the development of the dentition.

A correct tongue resting position promotes a harmonious tooth position and can prevent malformations in the jaw and teeth.
