Occlusal Splint
An occlusal splint, also known as a bite splint, is a dental device made of plastic that fits over the teeth of either the upper or lower jaw. It is primarily used for:
- treating bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching),
- correcting dental misalignments, and
- alleviating temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.
The splint acts as a buffer between the rows of teeth, preventing direct contact that could lead to tooth wear (occlusal wear), damage, or pain. It also helps relax the masticatory muscles and reduces stress on the jaw joint.
Occlusal splints are custom-fitted to ensure optimal comfort and maximum effectiveness. They are typically worn at night but can also be used during the day if necessary. Regular cleaning and dental check-ups are essential to maintain the splint's hygiene and functionality.
The RehaSplint can be used as a helpful preparatory or bridging measure, positioning the jaw in a relaxed state and relieving discomfort before starting a tailored splint therapy.
