Abrasion
In dentistry, abrasion refers to the progressive loss of tooth structure due to mechanical forces not caused by chewing. This can occur through:
- Teeth grinding (bruxism),
- Brushing teeth with too much pressure, or
- Using a toothbrush that is too hard.
The consumption of very hard foods or the frequent use of toothpicks can also lead to abrasion.
The wear typically affects the enamel, the outer layer of the teeth, and as it progresses, it can expose the underlying dentin, leading to sensitivity and further dental issues.
